Whether you enjoy sport as a spectator or a participant, Bangkok is the place for you. Sports facilities offer tennis, badminton and other mainstream sports, and as very few countries have more golf courses than Thailand, and there are some superb international courses within easy reach of Bangkok city centre, with excellent clubhouse amenities, challenging scenic courses and smiling, friendly service from Thai golfing's trademark female caddies. Golf There are about 20 golf courses within easy reach of Bangkok, and most hotels will be able to arrange a game for visitors via their travel desk. Football Thais are crazy about football, and there are stadiums that stage matches between Thailand and visiting teams from Asia and even further afield. And of course, if any big football events are being held anywhere else in the world, there is no shortage of big-screen venues where you can sit and watch the games, usually live, while enjoying snacks and drinks. Muay Thai There are two main venues in Bangkok to watch Thai boxing, or Muay Thai. Lumpini Stadium Ratchadamnoen Stadium If you want to learn Thai boxing, there is no shortage of training facilities, many of them well geared to cater for foreign guests. Tennis Thailand's tennis sensation Paradorn Srichaphan has given the game a very high profile at home, and more and more Thais are picking up a racquet in hopes of becoming the next champion: or just keeping fit and having fun. If you feel like honing your backhand and forehand skills, many major hotels have their own tennis court, and there are plenty of public tennis and squash courts throughout the city in public parks, at universities or fitness centres. Bowling Bowling enthusiasts will find a game easily enough, the lanes usually located on the top floor of shopping malls with a host of entertainments such as cinemas, video games, karaoke lounges and food halls. |
